Why LA BRUTALE?
It’s the term that Samuel and Vincent used right from the beginning.
It naturally reflects the idea of preserving the raw appearance of the material. And is, perhaps, a nod to the “brutality” of the history of the terroir…
A certain… brutality meant we almost didn’t share this term…
Anne Bourdu, a friend of Samuel’s and a legal expert, provided countless energy and exactness to enable us to share this exclusivity with you.
LA BRUTALE is a limited edition series of 350 numbered and stamped pieces. It is not a standard industrial object.
Each pallet in the series is unique.
Why? Firstly because wood is a natural, living material. Each pallet in the series has its own beauty. Darker or lighter, more or less damaged, each pallet has lived through adventures, accidents and impacts, and still bears the resulting marks which should absolutely be preserved.
The work and the talent of David Carrara, cabinet maker and creator, are what give each pallet its new life.
This work requires a subtle hand and must be discreet. It should not remove the marks of time but should reveal them without accentuating them.
All the wrinkles and scars are exposed. These express the character and the soul of each pallet.
The whole pallet is cleaned and anything potentially dangerous (protruding nails or splinters) is carefully removed. The aim of the cleaning and waxing process, using natural wax, is to emphasise every detail of the wood grain by accentuating its original appearance. All of David’s work is intended to preserve the innate natural tension of the object and to bring it alive.
The pallet has now begun its second life, with an even stronger presence and an undeniable charisma … And touching the wood procures an appealing sensation of velvety softness.
As we said in the OUR STORY section of this website, the table top is, in essence, the pallet itself
upon which a glass plate of the same size will be indirectly placed.
Lengthy research was needed to find the appropriate glass. We needed glass that would allow us to preserve the superb interior structure of the pallet. It would have to be sufficiently dense and thick, heavy enough to ensure perfect stability for the whole table, and totally safe.
It fits in harmoniously with the wood of the pallet by its presence, real but discreet. We said above that the glass table top was indirectly placed onto the pallet …
So now we come to the second key element of any table: the base.
One of LA BRUTALE’s original features is that it has two bases:
- The legs, like any table, between the table top and the floor.
- The legs between the glass plate and the body of the table top, itself made from the wooden pallet.
Here, again, there was a lengthy research process before the creators found exactly what they wanted.
It was thus the base of the masts at Allouis that inspired Samuel and Vincent for the design of the legs. A close friend of Samuel’s, Frédéric Moquet, an advertising creative adept in the art of refinement, would contribute to this particular aspect. It corresponded well to the idea of an elegant, “feminine” and perfect form. The pieces of the base are 3-sided, soaring, slender pyramids, in medium-grey brushed aluminium, around 180 mm high, created and manufactured to measure in an art foundry in France.
The base perfectly reflects the link between the people behind LA BRUTALE while distilling the tension of the object at the same time.
LA BRUTALE is thus composed of 8 identical legs:
4 legs joining the pallet top to the floor and 4 legs, inverted, joining the pallet top to the glass table top.
The conjunction of a square’s perfect forms, in the pallet and in the glass top, with the pyramids, in the
8 legs, is what gives LA BRUTALE this powerful magnetic presence, this perfect balance which plays with transparency.
And this pure, yet imposing, object provides a fascinating sensation of lightness and grace.
The prototype for LA BRUTALE was created in September 2009. It has since undergone subtle improvements in order to achieve an even more discernible inner strength.
Number zero of LA BRUTALE, the first successful piece, was completed in April 2011. It will remain the property of its creators.
The launch of the series of 350 numbered pieces of LA BRUTALE takes place in July 2011, with LA BRUTALE stamped N°1/350 going on sale on the 14th July.
LA PALETTE is part of a resolute approach towards preserving the Planet.
LA BRUTALE had a first life as a modest support
structure.
Someone looked at it with fresh eyes and has given it a second life.
LA BRUTALE, the first collection from LA PALETTE, is born.
In order to create LA BRUTALE, LA PALETTE did not cut down any trees; it transformed, or “recycled”, an existing wooden object.
LA PALETTE will be a partner in a reforestation programme.
